Food And Drink


French cuisine is right up there with Mexican, Chinese, and Italian as the most recognized food in the world. Chefs from around the world have been learning culinary arts at the French culinary schools of France as these rich traditions of cooking have been perfected over many centuries.

When you come to learn French in France, wherever it may be, try at least one of the dishes mentioned here. Some of the most popular dishes in France include: Tournedos (steak wrapped in bacon), entrecôte (rib steak), gigot de présalé (leg of lamb) served with flageolets (light green beans) or pommes dauphines (deep-fried mashed potato puffs). If you are a seafood lover then you won't forget the fresh Fish, oysters, mussels, or shrimp. Seafood is typically served with mushroom, garlic, olive oil, and different vegetables.

Most French breakfasts include toast, croissant or brioche served with hot chocolate or coffee Like in many European countries, lunch is the large meal of the day and typically is made of of a ham sandwich, crepe pancakes, or meat pies. Dinner is lighter and might be some bread, portion of meat and/or vegetables, salad, cheese and dessert. Many students have learned to adjust to these French customs on dining but may take a little time to adjust at first.

Wine is the drink of choice in France and provides the world with the largest supply out of any other country. The French produce one-quarter of the wine supply in the world but drink about four-fifths of that. France is also knwn for their fabulous liqueurs which include Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados, and Grand Marnier. Imbibing one of these products may provide a great means for liberating your French skills when practicing the language at a local restaurant or bar in France.

France is especially known for producing large quanties of quality cheese. Some of the most well known French dairy products include roquefort, brie, camembert and chèvre. France is known for its fine dining experience and some of the top chefs from around the world head restaurants that specialize in local fare or in more cosmopoltan cities like Nice or Paris, you will find different restaurants with South America, Mexican, Chinese or Japanese menus. Local cafes and bistros are great if you want to grab a bit to eat and experience an affordable take on popular French dishes.

Those who have come to learn French at one of the schools in France will not forget the stops into the local Boulangeries for a fresh hot baguette or stunning selection of pastries. Some students have been known to have to do a little extra clothes shopping or exercise once they get back from their French studies.
